After reviewing the statistics for 2011, the company Pingdom concluded that the number of Internet users recorded a large increase from 360 million users, as recorded at the end of 2000, to 30% of the world's population.

E-mail:

During 2011, there was 3.1 billion e-mail accounts. Microsoft Outlook was the most popular customer with a 27% market share while  Hotmail was the most popular service with 360 million users.

Last year also marked the fortieth anniversary of the first email ever sent. The number of global Web sites climbed to 555 million in December, while 300 million new ones were added last year.

Domains:

The number of registered domains reached 220 million during the third quarter of last year. .com domain names proved to be the most common with a figure of 95.5 million

The social network:

By the end of 2011, Facebook had more than 800 million users, of which 200 million joined last year.

The number of Twitter accounts increased to 225 million while 100 million active users were during the last year.

Lady Gaga ended up last year as the most popular person on Twitter and is currently followed by more than 18.1 million people while #Egypt was the most used hashtag on Twitter over the past year. In total, 2.4 billion social media accounts flooded cyberspace over the past year.

By continents and countries:

Statistics by continent show that there are 922 million internet users in Asia, 476 million users in Europe, while North America is in third place with 271 million users. When statistics are broken down into individual countries, China ranks first with 485 million people using the Internet, representing more than 36% of the country's total population.

Mobile devices:

By the end of this year, it is estimated that there will be 5.9 billion mobile subscribers in a world with a total of 7 billion people. The active mobile network includes 1.2 billion users, while 85% of all mobile devices shipped last year also had a built-in Web browser.

Predictions for this year:

When it comes to this year, everything indicates that the Internet will continue to grow, according to Pingdom. Bearing in mind that personal and professional lives are increasingly exposed online, in the future we will rely on the Internet in a way that was never imagined. Whether it is good or not, the internet is a very important component in everything we do.
