Simply upload a 1 × 1 px image (so you don't see it) and you can write much longer statuses. More precisely, it is not a status but a description of the image, and there can be significantly more characters. 

You can also create an album called "Statuses" and put 1 × 1 px images there and you will have all the statuses in one place.

Another advantage is that you can change the status at any time by opening the image and editing the description/status below it. You can also share statuses again by going to that status image and clicking Share.
