Google surprises us with new options from time to time, so we got a few in a short period regarding Google Maps:
- real-time location sharing
- information on whether the facility has wheelchair access
- display of crowds in buildings in real-time
- display graphs when the building is most crowded during the day
- live traffic
- and many others…
As I mentioned, we also have live traffic, so you can see where there is less and where there is more traffic. However, this feature is no longer only available in real-time, we can view it for any day and hour of the week.
Google collects this information in several ways, all through users' Android devices. It uses positioning sensors (GPS and mobile data) to determine how many devices are moving at what speed on a route. In addition, it uses the distance of the device from the network station as data if the device does not have GPS or mobile data enabled.
How to activate this option?
If you go to maps.google.com you can activate live traffic when you click on Menu and select the "Traffic" option (at the top). You will now see live traffic.
At the bottom of the page, you have a horizontal line and the option to choose: Live traffic (already highlighted) and Normal traffic - choose another.
Several options will now appear, so you can select a day of the week and slide it along the line that marks the hours of the selected day. As you drag the slider you will see that the data on the map changes.
