In this article, I will show you how to hide your IP address completely free of charge and thus be anonymous on the Internet. You can hide your IP address in several ways, but I will show you the most effective one.
What is an IP address?
Your ISP provides you with an Internet connection after you pay for the service. He gets IP addresses and then shares them with users.
In the case of ADSL Internet, each user has his own public dynamic IP address through which he accesses other devices on the Internet, but other devices can also access it, ie. that device.
In the case of cable users, they are located from CGNAT and the whole group of users has the same (for offline devices) IP address, but they differ from each other within their group. This is safer for users but it takes away their freedom - which I wrote about here.
Basically, an IP address is like a phone number for a computer. Sites (ie the machines on which they are located) also have an IP address, and pairs of domains and IP addresses are located in the DNS table (as a directory).
When you access a site, your computer knows the IP address of that site, but that site also knows the IP address of your computer.
So, whatever you do online, whatever site you visit, your IP address is exposed.
Why hide an IP address?
With the help of free tools, it is possible to easily determine the provider and the location of the IP address, ie. your location. Every site knows where you are accessing it from and through which provider.
Also, your ISP knows which sites you visit, whether you use Torrent, your browsing history… everything you do online.
If, for example, you download a movie through a site or Torrent, the government can send an order to the provider to check what you did and whether you downloaded piracy.
If you don't want your ISP to know what you're doing online or you don't want all the sites you visit to know your location, then you'd like to hide your IP address.
How to hide the IP address?
You have several options but the most secure is your VPN. What is a VPN you ask? I've written a lot of blog posts about it, but I'll be brief here as well.
VPN (a virtual private network) is a computer (server) located somewhere in the world and offers VPN services. The one who runs that server can create an account for you to connect to that VPN. And then, when you try to access a site, all the traffic goes through the VPN first.
Therefore, the sites and your ISP will only see that you are connecting to a server (VPN) there, but not what you are doing. Every visit to any site, every download from the Torrent, every internet call… all this is kept as a simple (but also encrypted) connection to the VPN server.
As a result, no one knows which sites you visit, and they will see the location of the VPN server for the location, not yours.
Now, it is important to find a good VPN that does not store logs so that government agencies cannot request information about what you have visited online.
It is also important to you that the VPN does not "leak", that it supports Torrent and that it has strong data encryption.
You won't find all this in free VPN services, so you have to choose one paid one. I opted for Windscribe because you can get over 17GB of free traffic per month (see how)! If someone buys the Pro version through you, you will also get the Pro version.
This VPN is very cheap for what it offers and is ideal for beginners. It has strong encryption, Torrenting is allowed, you can use it on multiple devices, it has good applications, it has built-in AdBlocker, it doesn't save logs, it doesn't leak, it has good speed…
You have several popular locations on offer, and in the Pro version, you have all the locations, including Serbia. So, if you are from the diaspora and want to, say, watch the RTS planet for free - you will be able to do so via this VPN.
