Fall of the Samurai is the first solo expansion for Total War: Shogun 2 was set in Japan during the Boshin War in the 1960s. It is a civil war that began as an ideological struggle due to the pro-Western policy of the shogunate.
Clans that were against this policy fought against the shogunate and to restore power to the emperor, while during the war both sides used weapons that were no longer classic for Japan in the last century, but also used rifles and armor. The result is a unique environment: samurai who use forged swords, but also rifles and everything that that time brought.
At the same time, this environment adds some new dimensions to the series with bombing from ships, then the use of railways as well as the possibility to take direct control over artillery units.
Multiplayer options remain basically identical to those that exist in Shogun 2 . You can play the campaign with a friend or play Avatar Conquest mode in which you can upgrade an existing avatar through online battles. The result is a game that will instantly learn familiar to all those who have ever played Total War titles before.
After choosing one of the clans in favor of either the shogun or the emperor, you must secure victory for your master or yourself if you feel you are fighting for a republic by conquering enough new maps of Japan.
The navy was significantly improved and became strategically important. For the first time in the Total War game, the Navy can bomb cities and armies, damaging critical buildings and decimating enemy forces.
On the other hand, maritime trade has been reworked, so the navy no longer has to capture and occupy strategic points to secure foreign trade. As a result, no one can monopolize foreign trade, but the navy can occupy trade routes to reduce the profit the enemy makes.
Many of the challenges related to the campaign relate to the need to modernize your territory and citizenship without causing dissatisfaction among the people. Certain technologies and buildings can increase the level of modernization, which improves your research speed and opens up new research options. However, you have to balance between modernizing and maintaining people's satisfaction, because revolt can quickly occur when their traditional way of life is disrupted.
All in all, Fall of the Samurai is a very interesting game that brings great progress compared to Shogun 2, and which will surely keep you stuck in front of the monitor for many hours.
