The FBI warns that thousands of users could be left without internet access this summer.
Many of them are unaware that their problem began when international hacker groups posted a fake ad that on July 9 is supposed to take control of infected computers around the world.
So the FBI recently, with the help of government computers, set up a secure network to prevent Internet interruptions for users who got the virus. However, that system needs to be shut down.
They encourage users to visit dcwg.org to check if they are "infected" and to find a detailed explanation of how to resolve the issue.
Many do not even know that their computers "picked up" the virus, although hacker software probably slowed down their surfing and disabled their antivirus software, which makes their computers more susceptible to other problems.
Hackers have managed to inject viruses into, presumably, more than 570,000 computers worldwide.
They take advantage of flaws in the Windows operating system and, among other things, install malicious software that excludes antivirus updates.
