TechSmith, the author of the popular Camtasia Studio, offers a free solution under a somewhat unusual name - Jing.
To get started, you need to create a free user account, for which you will only need a valid e-mail address. Provided that you need additional functionality provided by the Pro version of the application, there is the possibility of paying an annual subscription, although the free version also provides a sufficient set of options.
Jing does not have a user interface in the standard sense of the word. There are no program windows, drop-down menus, and the like. All you will see is a semi-transparent yellow ball icon at the top of the screen from where you can select the main functions.
Placing the mouse cursor on the icon will open three subsections of the program in the form of a beam, allowing you to start a new capture, ie. save the desktop, view the history of previous recordings, and open the settings dialog.
By clicking on "Capture", you first get the ability to define the area you want to capture.
When the surface is selected, the icons at the bottom give you the option to capture an image, video, or deselect and start over.
If you choose to save the image, you will get the option of basic editings, such as adding arrows, text, frames, etc., after which you can easily save the image to your computer by clicking "Save". The same is true for video recording, except for the possibility of subsequent editing and processing.
It is worth noting that Jing records video exclusively in SWF, ie. Flash format.
