Google Maps offers a public transportation option that aims to help us choose public transportation for the requested route. It's a great option, and now they've upgraded it.
Namely, PWDs (people with disabilities) who are in wheelchairs can choose the route option so that Google can offer them public transport adapted for them. Specifically, Google has added this option for all those who have difficulty moving, so it will be good for mothers who push children in strollers, but also for people who use crutches or some other walking aid.
So, the idea is to avoid inaccessible approaches to public transport, such as high platforms, high stairs without an elevator nearby, and the like.
However, this information is currently available in only six major cities in the world: London, New York, Tokyo, Mexico City, Boston, and Sydney. However, Google says it will be available in more cities over time.
This is another in a series of options intended for PWDs because if you remember, Google has also added information on whether a facility has wheelchair access. If you regularly contribute to Google Maps, then you may have noticed that it occasionally asks you about the facility you have access to. It’s just confirmation that Google thinks a lot about OSI. If you don't contribute to Google Maps, my suggestion is to do so because you also find useful information on Google Maps left by others, so this is the minimum way to return the favor.
As far as Serbia is concerned, we still do not have a normal public transport system, so we will get this new option only after public transport is settled (that is, in a few decades).
However, the option is available everywhere, and you can access it as follows:
- Open Google Maps (PC or phone)
-
Create a route
Classic route creation: choose the place of departure and the place of arrival. -
Choose public transportation
For transport, select "Public transport". Just click on the tram icon, or whatever. -
Public transport options
You will see "Options", click. -
Choose wheelchair access
You will see the types of vehicles, as well as route options. Select "Wheelchair Access" here.
As I said, you will not get any wheelchair-adjusted route if the route is in Serbia. You will be informed: "These results may be incomplete - not all public transport agencies in this area have provided their information.“ If you really want to test, create a route in one of those cities.
And you can watch a promo video showing how it all works:
