Whether you travel alone, with or without an agency, it is always advisable to equip yourself. Since smartphones are capable of many things, you can equip yourself with useful applications that will help you in a country where you have never been or have been.
I made a list of some useful applications, but I note that most require an internet connection. I know that many do not have internet abroad, but they do not have the money to buy roaming packages from their mobile operators. If you have internet abroad then you can enjoy all the benefits that these apps offer.
Organization
First of all, everything should be put on paper, ie. in our case - on the phone. How to put the whole travel plan on the phone? Well application.
- TripIt - in this application you can put the whole travel plan, synchronize with the calendar, share on social networks, synchronize with multiple portable devices… track flights, transfers, and other means of transport…
- TripCase - is another similar application. Each has its advantages, so choose the one that suits you best.
- PackPoint - if you can't handle packaging, you always forget something, this application will help you with packaging.
Accommodation
If you are organizing your own trip, here are some popular apps to help you find accommodation.
- Airbnb - is the most popular application with a huge database of accommodation, users, reviews, and images… People from the Balkans are afraid to use such applications because the "job" is not done in "four eyes", but virtually. But it is not a science.
- TripAdvisor - is not just a Booking app but you can use it to see reviews of other users about a place: hotel, villa, restaurant… So you can immediately know if a place suits you or not.
- Trivago - is another application for searching and booking accommodation. It also has filters to help you find accommodation.
- Hotel Tonight - if you need accommodation right away with discounts, this app offers just that. You can quickly and easily find accommodation in the hotel, both cheaper and luxury apartments.
Food
I believe that everyone wants to eat something in another country that they can't eat anywhere else. If you travel with a guide, then he will tell you where there is something cheap (because Serbia), and you can certainly look for something on your own.
- Yelp - is the most popular application with which you can find places to eat. It has a huge base of users, ratings, and pictures… so you can find out firsthand which restaurants/cafes are nearby to your liking. It has good filtration systems so it is even easier to find.
- Foodspotting - this application does not focus on finding a place to eat, but on the dishes themselves. I believe that you, like me, want to try something homemade abroad, new, which you don't have the opportunity to do anywhere else. That is why looking for good food is more important than looking for the restaurant itself. People send portion pictures and other information through this application, and of course, you should share your experiences after a meal.
- Restaurant Finder - is another app for finding restaurants, I inserted it as an alternative to Yelp. There is not much to write about it, the application finds restaurants nearby and based on filters.
Finance
Of course, you have to take care of the budget (again, Serbia), so it is desirable to have an assistant in the form of an application.
- XE Currency - if not the best currency conversion app. There are so many options and I have been using it personally for a couple of years. It works without the internet but of course, you need the internet to refresh the course.
- Goodbudget - an application that allows you to track where and how you spend money. There are other similar applications, I singled out this one because I used it for a while.
Other useful applications
And finally, a few more applications that can help if you go abroad alone.
- Google Maps Offline - you definitely need maps unless you know the cities you're going to by heart. Whether you have internet or not, Google Maps is, in my opinion, the best option. I have already written why, so read here: https://do-you-know-tech.blogspot.com/2016/07/the-best-android-navigation-without.html
- Google translate - is perhaps the best translation application. There are plenty of options and a simple interface. You can also download offline files that will allow you to translate text captured by the camera or speech or plain text without the Internet (popular languages only).
- WhatsApp, Viber, Skype, FB Messenger - if you have an internet roaming package and not calls/messages. These applications are familiar to everyone and are certainly best for communication over the Internet.
- LiveTrekker - the application will track your every step, and places you have visited and add locations to the pictures you have taken. That way you will have an overview of the trip when you return. There are plenty of options and I definitely recommend it.
- GasBuddy - if you refuel yourself you will definitely look to save as much as possible. This service offers information on current prices at gas stations.
In the end…
These are just some apps, there are really a lot of them. I was looking to list only the free ones, but most have some kind of Pro plans that offer more options. Feel free to recommend if you know some useful and put a link in the comment to help others :)
