Probably everyone in the family has a family tree drawn on a larger piece of paper where new members are regularly added (drawn). And that paper is passed down from generation to generation. But as the time comes when everything is digitized, it's time to think about digitizing your family tree. This is also where family tree-making programs come into play.
You can draw a tree in MS Paint, or a similar program, but then why are so many programs created just for that? I came across one, probably the best, called MyHeritage. Why is it a good program? It has a bunch of options.
Some of the possibilities are: automatic finding of a family tree and matching people, searching for historical records of ancestors, synchronization with an online account, complicated family ties, adding pictures, dates, contact information for each person… and much more.
The tool is used by a large number of people and has a large base of family trees, which makes it possible to find common ancestors. So you can find a person who made a tree similar to yours, compare and connect them! Yes, you can copy some people and links from a tree made by your cousin that you didn't even know about. So you can find some relatives online that you have never seen.
Next, you can generate various statistics and graphs. Eg male / female population ratio, the ratio of living and deceased, age, etc.
So a lot of options really. The only drawback is that not all are available with a free account. Perhaps the biggest drawback, if you have a free account, is that you can't generate an entire tree. But, I also found a solution for that, which is at the end of the article.
Well, if you decide to digitize your family tree, register for the service to free (or pay if you want more options), download the program, and start bringing in relatives. The program also has the Serbo-Croatian language and supports letters with nodules. You may be a little confused at first, but that's because there are too many options. However, you will have a "guide" through the interface during use. Of course, as you add the immediate family, you will understand how everything works, and you will discover most of the options.
Okay, you have your family tree in digital form and it's in the cloud. When you remember to replenish the tree after a few years, visit the site, log in with your account and change what you want.
Now, how do you print/save an entire family tree?
- export the.GEDCOM file by clicking on "File > Export to Gedcom" and save it somewhere,
- install the program "GenealogyJ" and load the saved .gedcom file,
-
Click on the gear on the left and select the option "Graphical tree formatted by yEd"
- save somewhere
- install the program "yEd" and import the file you saved in the previous step
- you will see a family tree! You can change it, arrange it, adjust the size of the field, letters… Click on "File > Save as…" and select the format in which you want to save (pdf, png, jpg, SVG, HTML…), or you can print: "File > print preview > adjust as you wish "
When you want to edit a family tree, as I wrote before, log in to MyHeritage and edit. If you want to print a new one, pay the Premium order or repeat this procedure above.
