Are you annoyed by those sponsored messages that the authors insert at the beginning and end of each video? If the answer is yes, then the appendix I am writing about will be interesting.
First of all, let's clarify: I support everyone who creates interesting, helpful, and unique content and shares it for free with others. It is not easy and requires a lot of time and dedication - I know from personal experience. Still, there is a limit.
Lately, there are popular sponsored messages on Youtube that the authors insert in addition to all those strong advertisements that Youtube imposes itself.
Those messages can last a third, or even half, of a video clip. In addition, they are often not closely related to the subject of the video.
This is not the case with blogs; when writing a promo article, bloggers see that it is closely related to the topic of the blog and that it makes sense. We always check if what we are advertising is really worth it, and we also write instructions on how to use a promo product, and the like.
On Youtube, promo content is completely irrelevant and unusable - a classic TV commercial. Of course, there are exceptions, but that is a rarity.
How do I remove sponsored messages?
Now, if you don't want to watch these sponsored messages, there is one plugin that removes them automatically for you.
It's an open-source Chrome and Firefox add-on called SponsorBlock.
You may be wondering "hmm, how does the plugin know which part of the video is sponsored?" - the answer is "base".
The plugin relies on the users themselves who report the parts of the clips that contain the promo content. As soon as the user adds this information, it is sent to the central database and all other users of this add-on can use it.
When the plugin encounters a video for which there is information about the sponsored message in the database, it will automatically skip that part and a message will appear stating that this has just happened.
For each video you can report an error, ie. that the part with the sponsored message is not in the right place, otherwise, your review counts as a positive vote.
If you click "Unskip", the sponsored message will be displayed.
Currently, there are about 50,000 registered sponsors in the database and about 9,500 registered users who contribute to the database.
To add a sponsored message to the database, do the following:
- Install the add-on
- Play the video
- When the sponsored message starts, click on the "Start" plugin icon
- When finished, click "Stop"
- If you're sure this is it, click "Upload"
The author of the add-on wrote that he hopes to connect with the add-on "sponsorship_remover" (which works on the neural network) and thus make one ultimate add-on of this kind.
Remember: the more people hear about this supplement the base will be. So share this article.
